Your wedding catering can be a hugely important part of your big day, so it’s important to get it spot on. Organising the food and drink for your wedding often takes up a big chunk of your budget, requires lots of planning and it will be remembered by all of your guests – so you want to make sure you choose the right wedding caterer to help your plans become a reality that everyone will love!
If you’re beginning to plan your wedding, here are 5 important questions to ask your wedding caterer in order to make sure everything runs smoothly.
Wedding Catering Budget
There’s no point choosing a caterer, planning a menu and starting to organise the food and then discovering it will cost twice your budget! Make it clear from the start what your budget is so you and your caterer are on the same page. Ask them what the average costs for your type of menu would be before you start planning the finer details – or ask what they would be able to provide for your budget.
Wedding Catering Menu
Some couples are happy to choose dishes off a pre-set menu, whilst others prefer to create a fully bespoke menu for their wedding. Be sure to ask your caterer which options they offer, and whether they’re able to prepare special dishes specifically for your menu. Ask which kind of cuisines and dishes they specialise in so you can choose a caterer that suits your tastes and styles.
Whether you opt for a bespoke menu or not, definitely ask to book in for a menu tasting with your wedding caterer so you can sample the dishes and make sure everything tastes delicious.
Wedding Catering Set-Up
Before finalising the details, be sure to ask your wedding caterers exactly what they provide in addition to the food. Will they help with the set-up of the dining area? Do they provide crockery, glassware and cutlery? Do they provide waiting staff to serve the meal? Will they need any specialist equipment provided by you or the venue?
If there are any services like these that your wedding caterers don’t offer, you’ll need to make sure you hire extra staff or equipment to account for this.
Wedding Catering Drinks
Some wedding caterers offer a full bar service, others can provide bottles or specialist cocktails, whilst others concentrate only on food. Be sure to ask your wedding caterer whether they can offer a bar service or drinks menu, or whether you’ll need to hire a separate drinks company to provide this. If your wedding caterers don’t offer drinks, ask them to recommend a drinks company – they will no doubt have worked together with lots of fantastic suppliers at previous weddings!
Wedding Catering Timings
Timings are incredibly important when it comes to weddings! Ask your caterer to provide details of things like when they’ll need your finalised number of guests by, when you’ll need to book your menu tasting by and when your deposit/full invoice needs to be paid by.
Also ask them about the timings for the big day itself – will they need access to the venue the night before to set up the tables? What time will they need to have access the the kitchen? When will they need to pack up at the end of the night? Make sure they’re aware of when your ceremony ends so they can have canapés ready for guests, and let them know what time you would like the main meal to start.
